Title: Snowfall
Wordcount: 285
Fandom: Steven Universe
Rating: G
Warnings: none
Summary: Ruby, Sapphire, and gently falling snow.
Notes: Inspired by the weather, and a desire to write something cute-ish. I have never written Ruby/Sapphire, I am sort of terrified.

“Wow, it’s really coming down.”

Ruby looked out at the white, fluffy precipitation called “snow” before quickly ducking back into the small cave they’d taken refuge in. She didn’t like how it felt against her skin, the way it froze and melted and gave her chills.

“It’s pretty.”

“I suppose.”

Ruby sat beside Sapphire, their shoulders touching as they twined their fingers together, their gems not quite touching.

“Do you think they’ll be able to find us?”

Sapphire gave her partner a weak smile before resting her head against Ruby’s. “Of course.” Her form flickered for a moment and Ruby squeezed her hand in panic; their gems touched, whole against cracked. “They’re already on their way.”

Silence filled the cave as the snow continued to fall. “You did it again,” Ruby finally said, voice hoarse. “I should have taken that hit.”

“Ruby--”

“I Saw it, too!” Her voice echoed through the cave, and Ruby squeezed her eyes shut in a vain attempt to calm herself. “I could have taken it!”

Cool fingers against her cheek drew her back. She blinked her eyes open as Sapphire pressed a kiss against her forehead. “I know.”

“I want to be the one to protect you.” She held Sapphire’s hand palm up in both of hers. The crack spread like veins on a leaf, radiating along every facet. “Garnet always sides with you.”

“Garnet makes her own choices.” Sapphire flickered again, her voice distant despite being so close. “I’m glad she made the one she did.”

“I’m not.”

Sapphire smiled and rested her cheek against Ruby’s shoulder. Hands clasped tight between them, they sat in silence as outside their cave the snow continued to fall, soft and light.

Well, I made some edits to hopefully help the ending.

Silence filled the cave as the snow continued to fall, vibrant white changing to purplish-grey. “You did it again,” Ruby finally said, voice hoarse. She tapped a nervous finger against the top of Sapphire’s hand before she realized and quickly stopped. “I should have taken that hit.”

“Ruby--”

“I Saw it, too!” Her voice echoed through the cave, and Ruby squeezed her eyes shut in a vain attempt to calm herself. The air around her grew hot and stifling. “I could have taken it!”

Cool fingers against her cheek drew her back, the fire inside her quelled. She blinked her eyes open as Sapphire pressed a kiss against her forehead. “I know.”

“I want to be the one to protect you.” She held Sapphire’s hand palm up in both of hers. The crack spread like veins on a leaf, radiating along every facet. Rose told her once that those veins were how things lived on this planet. “Garnet always sides with you.”

“Garnet makes her own choices.” Sapphire flickered again, her voice distant despite being so close. “I’m glad she made the one she did.”

“I’m not.”

Sapphire smiled and rested her cheek against Ruby’s shoulder. The red gem held her partner close as she stared out at the darkness outside their cave.

“Does it hurt?”

“The pain will pass.”

“Is there anything I can do?”

Sapphire hummed softly and held Ruby’s hands in hers. “You’re already doing everything.”

Cheeks bright, Ruby pressed her face against the top of Sapphire’s head and hummed with her, the song soft and clear around them as the snow continue to fall.
