“Hikaru! Brother, where are you?”
Hige pushed through the undergrowth towards their secret fort, shouting the entire way. Hikaru better be here, she thought. I’ve searched everywhere else!
The fort came into view a few moments later, nothing more than artistically piled logs and canvas, and Hige pushed the entrance flap aside and burst in.
“Brother!”
Hikaru sat near the back, looking dejected and rather put out. Hige plopped herself down beside him.
“I’ve been looking all over for you! I saw your teammates so I knew you were home. Why are you hiding?”
Her twin hugged his knees to his chest and made a face. Hige smacked his arm lightly.
“Don’t get mad at me. Why’re you hiding?” She paused and then leaned in close to examine him. “Are you hurt? Did something bad happen?”
Hikaru pushed her away and shook his head. Hige leaned right back in and slapped her palm against his forehead. He made a soft cry but said nothing else.
“You don’t have a fever. Do you hurt somewhere? You gotta tell me!”
Hikaru pushed her away again and sighed. He reached into his jacket and pulled out some paper and a pen and quickly jotted something down. Hige tried to peek before he held it up for her to read.
“’I’m fine. Go away.’ You’re obviously not fine!” She nearly yelled as she shoved the paper away. Something must have happened. She gasped. “Did they cut out your tongue?!”
Hikaru glared at her.
“Ah, yeah. That wouldn’t happen,” she conceded, her cheeks as red as her tattooes. His teammates definitely would have mentioned that. “But still! Tell me! I’m really worried…”
He held the paper up again and she shoved it away again. He could be so stubborn! “Did something happen to your throat?” She leaned in close and he turned bright red, even his neck. “Did someone smack it? I don’t see any marks…”
Hikaru sighed and gently pushed her away before quickly scribbling on his paper.
“’Promise not to laugh.’” She frowned. “Laugh at what?” He underlined ‘promise’ in thick, angry lines. And then jabbed a finger at it for good measure. “Ok, ok! I promise!”
Hikaru fidgeted and Hige tensed. It must be something really bad, she thought. Neither breathed for what seemed forever.
“…My voice is funny.” And to emphasize the point, it cracked with the last word.
Hige bit her bottom lip and snorted. Hikaru glared at her and her laugh almost escaped.
“You promised!” Somehow his voice went up and down three times. Hige lost it completely and doubled over. “Stop laughing! It’s not funny!” But every time his voice cracked Hige just laughed harder and harder until Hikaru kicked her.
“Ow! Haha, s-sorry!” She held her side and winced. “That really hurt… But still! That’s so stupid! I was really worried!”
Hikaru hmphed and scrunched up his shoulders. He looked like a turtle. “I can’t go home like this.” He winced at every crack and squeak of his voice.
Hige brushed at her eyes, small laughs still bubbling up. “What about kaasan and tousan? They wanna see you, too.”
“Tell them I’m on a spiritual retreat or something.”
Hige slapped her hand to his arm. He winced. “Don’t be stupid.” She wrapped her fingers around his sleeve and pulled him to his feet, a huge grin on her face. “It’s not good to make us worry.”
“Wah Hige, wait!” He stumbled as she pulled him from their hideout, but she gleefully ignored his pitchy protests as she dragged him back home.
