Fandom: Eureka Seven

Warnings: post series spoilers
Summary: Maurice meets the newest member of the family.
Notes: Over seven years later, and I was hit hard with the urge to rewatch E7, and it moved me just as much the second time as the first. Then I watched the sequel. There is no sequel in my mind, and this was written to wash the bad taste out of my mouth. So be prepared for unrepentant fluff.

“Maurice.”

The thirteen-year-old boy jerked awake at the sound of his name, his siblings in the chairs beside him, their heads resting against each others’ as they slept. He blinked and rubbed the sleep out of his eyes as Renton knelt before him, a grin on his face.

“Maurice, you can come in now.”

Any trace of sleepiness melted away at those words, and Maurice nearly jumped out of his chair before looking back at Maeter and Linck. “What about them?”

Renton ruffled the boy’s hair, that grin still on his face, although Maurice noticed there were also bags under his eyes. His breath smelled a bit, too. “Let them sleep a little longer. You’re the big brother, so you should see her first.”

“Her?” Maurice jumped out of the chair as he followed Renton into the room across the hall, peeking around the older man’s side as he walked. “We have a baby sister?”

Renton nodded and opened the door, and Maurice hurried inside to find his mama lying in the bed and Mischa by her side, talking quietly. Eureka looked exhausted, her hair a mess against the pillows and her face even paler than usual.

“Just for a little while,” the doctor said, patting Eureka’s hand before she backed away from the bed and approached Renton. “She’s very tired, and so is the baby, so just a short visit.”

“Renton,” Eureka said sleepily. “Maurice.” She smiled and beckoned him over, a small bundle in her arms. “Come meet your little sister.”

Maurice nearly ran to the bed, his eyes wide. Renton brought a chair over and sat down beside him.

“She’s so tiny,” the boy said, and reached out to pull the blanket away from the baby so he could get a better look. His face scrunched up slightly. “But Mama…why is she so ugly?”

Both Eureka and Renton went silent, their eyes slightly wide before Renton laughed and ruffled Maurice’s hair again. Eureka looked from her eldest child to her husband, baffled. “Renton!”

“Sorry!” Renton grinned sheepishly, then reached out towards the little girl. “He isn’t exactly wrong…” Eureka glared and he scratched the side of his nose the same way he used to do when he was embarrassed. “A-anyway. May I?”

Eureka nodded and handed the baby over, and Renton held her against his chest, that goofy grin on his face while he stared down at her. Maurice watched him for awhile before turning back to his mother. Eureka took one of his hands in hers and squeezed gently.

“I’m sorry I called her ugly.”

“It’s ok.” She released his hand and laid back, her eyes lidded.

And then Mischa was there with Maeter and Linck, “Mama!” Linck cried and ran over to the bedside, while Maeter hurried to Renton so she could get a peek at the baby. Eureka patted her youngest boy’s cheek gently.

“Linck. I’m ok. You should go meet your sister.”

Maurice stayed back as Linck joined Maeter to crowd around Renton, who proudly showed off the little bundle in his arms. The three chatted quietly, and Eureka softly touched Maurice’s hand to draw his attention.

“How are you feeling, Maurice?”

“I’m happy,” he said, and squeezed Eureka’s hand. “I’m really happy.”

“You’ll help take care of her, won’t you?”

“Yes!” Maurice looked back at Renton to find the older man watching him. “It’s what big brothers do, right?”

Renton smiled.

“All right, everyone,” Mischa said briskly, “but Eureka and the baby need their rest. And from the looks of things, so do you.” Maurice started to protest but the doctor held up a hand to silence him. “They will still be here in the morning, I promise. Now off you go.”

Maurice turned to Eureka, only to find her sleeping softly, oblivious to the world. He smiled and leaned over the bed to kiss her cheek. “Goodnight, Mama.”
