Title: Her Strength
Wordcount: 423
Fandom: Katekyou Hitman Reborn
Rating: G
Warnings: Spoilers for Chrome's backstory, set around chapter 215ish because that girl needs more screentime and I wanted to look into a certain scene and would like to try to grasp her character. I entirely blame Jchan for this. Also, I really should have a summary spot here, why don't I?
Summary: Chrome finds her own strength to keep going.

Mukuro-sama…

The dark closed around her tightly, cold and numbing. She gasped, breathed in nothing and pain shot through her body, replacing the numbness only to return again with each labored inhale. She moved—tried to move, she couldn’t tell, nothing changed—and reached out desperately to find that presence she couldn’t remember living without.

Mukuro-sama…!

Something grabbed her in the dark, broke through the pain and numbness and she froze. The darkness receded slightly but she still couldn’t see—the blackness was less absolute, but only just.

“You must hold on!”

The dark receded more to a filmy grey and she reached out. She knew that voice. Somewhere… The pain shot through her again and she cried out and drew her hand back. The darkness sucked in around her, deeper and colder than before and she curled into herself. She couldn’t. Everything hurt, everything—

“If you die, we’ll all be in trouble.”

She swallowed painfully and reached out again. The hair on her arms rose as her skin tightened, but she pushed through the cold. Don’t die here. She couldn’t give in. She knew that. But she was alone, and in pain, and—

I have need of you, Nagi.

My cute little Chrome.

…She was useless if she died here. Her heart throbbed and the darkness crept closer as she pulled her hand back and clutched at her chest and collapsed stomach. She was useless here, in a useless body, and the knowledge dragged her down.

No one wanted that child to survive.

Her hands clenched tightly in her white dress and her nails pressed painfully into her palms through the fabric. The darkness pulsed and receded before her, no longer so cold. She stood slowly—when had she knelt?—and the dark waned again. Now grey and unthreatening, she pushed it away.

She would not be useless again. For Mukuro-sama, for the body he saved, for her, she would not be weak.

No one wante…

With a cry she shoved the memory as far away as she could, scattering the darkness with it. Her body shook and pain shot through her but she pushed past it, through the grey twilight to the place he always met her, the only place Nagi still lived. The sky was dull without his presence and she shivered and wrapped her arms around her body. But her mind reached out, farther and deeper until she found the feel of his power and hers and she grasped it.

No. She would not be useless this time.
