Gundam00 - Descent

Title: Descent
Wordcount: 1718
Fandom: Gundam00
Rating: PG-13
Warnings: Spoilers for Allelujah's past. Violence.
Summary: And every breath they drew was Hallelujah...

Note: I'm sure there's probably supplementary stuff on the boys' backgrounds, but as I haven't read those yet, and this idea was clawing at my head, I wrote this. More than likely this is completely AU.

The small ship floated listlessly through space, long since off any course it may have once had. Inside the lights were dim and dying, and garbage littered the corridors, but that didn’t dull the sound of laughter.

“Over here!”

Allelujah grinned and darted after the other boy. Dmitri insisted on keeping morale up despite the ship’s failing lifelines, and Allelujah was happy to play along. Anything to take his eyes and mind off the darkened rooms and the thinning air.

He caught the other boy as he pushed off a wall and entered another corridor. Allelujah grabbed the fluttering white shirt and tugged, and Dmitri fell back against the younger boy. Allelujah pushed him away playfully and kicked away from the wall in the opposite direction, Dmitri following quickly.

“Ah!”

The two boys collided near a turn as Allelujah grabbed at the wall to stop himself. Xiao eyed them both and then shook his head and propelled himself away. Allelujah blushed and scratched the back of his head, but Dmitri grinned and pushed him gently.

“C’mon, let’s get some food.”

“…Yeah.”

Food wasn’t plentiful, and what remained could hardly be called such. The rations were hard and unfulfilling, and each boy was allowed only two pieces a day. Dmitri looked down at the dwindling supply and sighed, but tossed Allelujah a packet.

“Eat up.”

The other boys came by while they ate, and Allelujah smiled at each in turn. Xiao ignored them all, and Wang secluded himself in a corner. Ever since they’d lost their course the two older boys stood aloof, watching, and Allelujah was hard pressed not to feel uneasy. With them like that he could understand Dmitri’s insistence on keeping up morale, but the only ones beside him and Dmitri who followed the plan were the two younger boys. They spoke rarely, and Allelujah wasn’t entirely sure of their names. Xiao referred to them by their numbers, but after not having a name himself, Allelujah couldn’t bring himself to do the same.

He ate in silence and listened to Dmitri talk, and after the unsatisfying meal he took his leave. His room was farther along down the corridor, but he floated slowly along. His stomach growled angrily and he hugged himself tightly.

’How much longer can we last?’

He pushed the dark thought away, afraid of it, and once again found himself wishing Marie were there. She’d know what to do.

Time passed slowly aboard the ship. Dmitri’s morale games finally stopped as no one had the energy to pretend anymore. Allelujah floated through the halls alone now, his thoughts dark more often than not.

’We can’t continue this way. Soon—‘

No! He cut that thought off quickly. He hated the dark voice in his head, but the less he spoke to the others and the thinner the air became the louder that voice grew. It terrified him by how much it sounded like him.

A soft chanting drew his attention, and the voice disappeared. Allelujah pushed himself through the corridors quickly and grabbed the half-open door to Dmitri’s room. The older boy floated lazily, his eyes closed as he continued his one-word mantra.

“…Dmitri?”

The boy stopped and opened an eye. “Allelujah. Hi.”

“I thought you were saying my name.” Allelujah pushed himself into the room and floated near his friend. “But it sounded wrong.”

“Ah, yeah. It’s a word my mom always used to say when she was praying.”

Allelujah looked down at the ground. Dmitri noticed and patted the younger boy’s head in understanding. It was rare to have memories. “But that’s all I remember. She said it constantly, even when they took me away.”

“Does it also mean to give thanks to God?”

Dmitri nodded. “I guess. I don’t really know. But I figure it worked for her, right? We were poor and she couldn’t take care of all of us, so God took me away. If he can grant her wish, he can grant mine, too.”

“What wish is that?”

“Isn’t it obvious? To find a place where we can live.”

Allelujah frowned, and the voice inside laughed. He flinched and grit his teeth against it, but Dmitri’s hand on his shoulder drew his attention back. The other boy stared at him for a long while, and then brushed Allelujah’s bangs back to the right. He blinked in surprise to realize he’d been looking through both eyes unhindered.

“Grey is a better color than gold, I think. You’re lucky.” He turned his own gold eyes away and started chanting again, and Allelujah propelled himself from the room.

“Who stole it?!” Xiao stared at them all, the empty food packet crushed in his fingers. “Who stole extra rations?!”

No boy spoke, and Xiao threw the plastic away. It floated harmlessly through the air and bumped into the far wall. Allelujah shrank down, afraid, but the voice inside laughed.

’You have to be quick if you don’t want to die! Isn’t that right, Allelujah?’

N-no… I didn’t take it! But the him that wasn’t him laughed louder, and the other boys slowly drifted away. And as the days passed and the food finally ran out entirely, all he had left was the voice.

’You can’t trust them. They know. They want us dead.’

N-no. They’re our friends.

‘Friends?! They’re trained to kill! They’ll kill us, Allelujah! Do you want to die?!’

No!

Allelujah floated in front of one of the port windows, the stars illuminating his reflection. He clawed at his hair each time it floated up and revealed his gold right eye.

Grey is better than gold… Grey is better than gold…!

‘That’s a lie, Allelujah. Grey means death.’

No!
He pushed away from the window and scurried down the corridor to his room. He shut the door behind him and curled up against it as he hugged himself, his stomach empty and in pain.

Grey is better, grey is better, grey is…

‘Allelujah.’

Arms circled him, cold to the touch, and breath moved the hair against his ear. Allelujah shivered and pulled away, only to smash his elbow into the wall.

Grey is better…

‘Come on, Allelujah.’
The arms tightened their hold as the voice echoed in his ear. ’You know what we have to do.'

I don’t…

‘Hey, Allelujah.’
The cold seeped in more until his breath froze in front of him as the dark voice whispered his name. His vision swam and his body shook.

…I don’t want to die…

‘So then let’s do it. You want to, I know. Isn’t that right,’
the cold dug in deeper, painfully, and Allelujah screamed. ‘Allelujah?!’

“STOP IT!” He turned and rammed his head into the wall as hard as he could, and suddenly the world went black.

He woke to screams. Blood covered the walls, but when he tried to look around his body wouldn’t move. Panic welled up and he screamed, but it only echoed hollowly in his mind as his body laughed.

“Isn’t it great, Allelujah?! Now we don’t have to die!”

’No… No! What have you done?!’

The two youngest boys lay in pools of blood at his feet, a single shot between each of their eyes. His body stepped over them, and for the brief moment they passed one of the windows Allelujah saw his gold eye flash, insane and remorseless, and he screamed again.

’Stop it! Stop it!’

His other self laughed as he marched through the ship, the gun held loosely in his hands. They found Wang next, and Allelujah watched as he quickly put a bullet through the older boy’s throat. Hot blood splattered his clothes and face but his other self ignored it. Xiao followed, but he wasn’t so easy to kill. Bullets refracted off the walls, back and forth with sparks shooting in all directions, but he too soon took a bullet to his face. Allelujah pushed him away, laughing as the body floated down the dark corridor to land in a heap on the floor.

“Last one, Allelujah.” He licked the blood from his lips and Allelujah shuddered and cowered in the corner of his mind. When they found Dmitri the boy was running through the corridors, a rifle slung over his shoulder, his eyes wide in shock. Allelujah laughed and kicked off from the floor as he chased him.

“More games, Dmitri? Hahahaha, I like this one!”

“Stop!”

Shots rang through the ship, followed by a heavy thump. The rifle fell away from Dmitri’s numb fingers and Allelujah closed in. The older boy pushed away from the wall and scrambled away, but it didn’t take long for them to corner him in one of the larger corridors. Allelujah clawed at his mind, desperate to get his body back as he stared down at his friend.

’No! Don’t do this!’

“Shut up, Allelujah! I’m doing this for us!”

“Please, Allelujah! Don’t do this!”

Allelujah’s eyes widened and he laughed, vicious and insane as Dmitri stumbled to the ground. The Allelujah inside went cold as hatred washed over him. “I’ll be the one to grant our wish, ‘cause God ain’t gonna.”

’No…’

Dmitri pushed himself against the wall and flung his arms up in front of him. “No, I don’t want to die! Allelujah! Allelujah!”

“That’s no good!” He went cold as his lips turned up in a smile. “You have to die!”

The older boy stared up at them, his eyes wide and unbelieving. “Allelujah…”

“You’re wrong.” He laughed inside and out and Allelujah cowered, terrified at the feelings rushing through him. “My name is…”

’NO—!’

The bullet imbedded itself in the wall behind Dmitri, and the boy’s body slowly began to float up as bits of blood and brain surrounded him. Allelujah watched the body, a grin marring his face as the voice inside cried.

’Hallelujah… No, Hallelujah…!’

The boy laughed again, long and high as he dropped the gun and tears ran down his face. Allelujah screamed until his voices went silent and he was left alone in the dark.

The ship was found a few days later. With nothing worth salvaging they left it floating alone and silent. They did not notice the small dark haired boy with a bright, gold eye steal away into the ship, a pistol held close to his bloodied clothes and an insane smile on his tear-stained face.
