Summary: Orlok takes Lili on a summer afternoon picnic
Notes: They just need to be happy
The summer heat radiated down with the midday sun, unrelenting. Lili stumbled behind Orlok, her fingers loosely held in his as they darted from shadow to shadow along the path. Perhaps midsummer wasn’t the best time to take an afternoon picnic, but they were already committed.
“Is it much farther?”
Orlok glanced back with a shy smile. “No, we’re nearly there.” He squeezed her fingers reassuringly and she rubbed her thumb across the back of his knuckle in response.
He’d come home a few days ago, excitedly talking about a beautiful place he found a half hour walk or so away from the cottage they rented. It wasn’t too far outside the village borders, so it wasn’t dangerous. Maybe they could have a picnic some time before the summer ended? Surely the panetteria could spare them for an afternoon. Lili couldn’t think of the last time they’d had any real chance to be alone together that wasn’t late at night when they were already tired from the day, and found herself wanting more than anything for that day off to arrive.
And so the days passed, and finally they had a free afternoon. More giddy than she was willing to admit, Lili packed a light lunch for them, and together they traveled down the path through the nearby woods and out of town. The day was beautiful, the sun climbing high into the sky and birds singing all around them. Unfortunately it was also one of the hottest days of the summer, and Lili’s enjoyment was marred by sweaty skin and clothes that stuck uncomfortably to her back.
“Lili, look.” Orlok’s voice drew her attention and she blinked past the sun in her eyes to see where he pointed.
The trees opened up to a sparkling blue pond and clear brook that burbled its way through the clearing and back into the trees. Soft, green grass waved invitingly in the wind, and Lili gasped. Orlok smiled and gently guided her forward, his right hand against her lower back.
“This is beautiful. You found it on your own?”
“Not quite.” He glanced down. “When I was making a delivery for the panetteria, one of the men asked if I’d found any time with my wife lately.” His ears burned red. “He said there was a nice place not far away we could go to, and gave me some directions.”
Lili’s heart thumped loudly. Even after all these months her heart jumped to be called his wife, even if technically it was not official. No witnesses had been present when they made their vows outside of Venice, and they dared not ask a priest to bless them. But the villagers never questioned them, had readily accepted them, and they’d found peace in this small rural village.
Despite the heat bearing down on her Lili darted forward with a peal of laughter, kicking off her shoes as she went to feel the cool grass through her tights. Orlok followed after with a surprised gasp, but she could hear the laugh in his voice all the same.
He caught up to her easily, his arms circling around her waist and pulling her close. Lili squealed in joy and nearly dropped the basket. “Orlok!” He gently took the item from her hands and set it down at his feet before hugging her closer and nuzzling her neck. “Orlok, it’s too hot,” she laughed and playfully pushed him away.
“Sorry. You just looked too cute.” He kissed her cheek and let her go so he could wander down towards the water. Lili followed after, her shoes forgotten in the grass along with their lunch.
Orlok was already sitting by the water, carefully taking off his shoes to set to the side. Lili joined him, discarding her tights so she could grab blades of grass with her toes as they sat side by side holding hands. “This place is beautiful.”
“It is.” He leaned forward to pick up a small rock and toss it towards the pond. It made a deep plunk sound and sank quickly, sending ripples out in lazy patterns. “I’m happy I could show it to you.”
“Me, too.” She leaned her head on his shoulder and he chuckled.
“Isn’t it too hot?” he teased.
“Mmm….” She closed her eyes and breathed in his scent, soap and linen beneath a sheen of sweat. It gave her peace, felt like home, and she sighed happily.
The only hint she had before he suddenly laid back was a shifting in his shoulders, and then her head was pillowed on his chest as he looked up at the clear sky above, his left hand tracing lazy circles on her hip. In the back of her mind she knew lying on the ground like this would most likely stain their clothes, but the grass was cool and comfortable, and being in his arms felt too nice.
“It’s so peaceful.” She pressed her left hand against his chest and his arm tightened around her. “I could lay here for hours.” Orlok hummed in agreement and she leaned her head back to give his jaw a quick kiss. “But then we won’t have time for lunch.”
“Don’t mind.” He rolled them over suddenly so he hovered over her, a bright smile on his face. His mismatched eyes seemed to glow with the light of the sun above them. He pressed his forehead against hers before kissing her, soft and slow, and any thoughts of lunch fled her mind.
By the time he let her up a little later she felt like they had been baking in the sun all afternoon. He smiled shyly as he helped her adjust her top and brushed sweaty hair away from her neck. Her heart raced at his touch. The braided updo she’d done that morning was in disarray, bits of grass and dirt stuck throughout the strands, and Orlok carefully picked at the bigger blades of grass with his fingers.
“I messed up your hair.” His fingers lingered against the nape of her neck before he let his hand drop to her side. Lili licked her lips.
“It’s alright. I can just wash it later.”
As one they both glanced at the pond, and Lili’s heart leapt to her throat. Absolutely not. It was broad daylight! Remote as this place was, it was still known to the villagers. It was one thing to potentially be caught rolling around kissing, but entirely another to, to… They didn’t even bring towels!
But she was also sweaty and dirty and…
Orlok had her in his arms before she realized. “O-orlok?!”
“...Would you like to?” He glanced at the pond again, and the cool clear water, and slowly began undoing the pins in her hair.
“I…” She looked back at her shoes and the basket, at the sun still hanging high in the sky, and then at him. His eyes were bright and clear. “...Okay.” He smiled and left her hair to start unbuttoning her top. “But I’m keeping my slip on, okay?”
He kissed the tip of her nose playfully, and in what felt like no time at all they stood in the grass, she in nothing but her slip and him bare. His well-toned body was beautiful, scars and all, and she did her best not to stare. It wasn’t often she saw him naked in the light like this. Orlok blushed when he noticed her roaming eyes, but resumed pulling the pins from her braid until her hair cascaded down around her shoulders.
“You look very pretty like this.” His quiet voice sent a jolt through her, but before she could respond he held his left hand out for her, and the moment she placed her fingers against his he scooped her up in both arms and carried her into the pond.
“Ah, it’s cold.” He shivered but never lost his smile, and Lili clung to his shoulders as he walked farther out until the water was at his waist. “Are you ready?”
“Ready..? Wait, no, Orlok–!”
He grinned mischievously and then dunked both of them under. Lili had barely a moment to close her eyes before she was engulfed in cold, refreshing water. She sputtered to the surface almost as soon as she went under, coughing and laughing and still in Orlok’s arms.
With her sudden dunking Lili adjusted quickly to the chill of the water and the relief it brought. She pulled herself away from Orlok and let herself float, the warm sun bearing down on her as she closed her eyes. After a few minutes she felt Orlok swim closer and start running his fingers through her hair, spreading it out along the surface of the water like spun gold and doing his best to clean it. The feeling of his hands along her scalp was soothing; maybe he could help her redo her braid when they were finished. She did like when he played with her hair.
“Mmm, this is nice.” She peeked over at him and was mesmerized by a rivulet of water that trailed from his shoulder to his chest and down to his hips hidden just below the surface. He noticed and smiled, then flicked some water at her. Lili giggled and splashed him back.
Since their departure from Burlone, Orlok had matured a lot, but he also let himself just…be, more. He was still serious and quiet, but he’d tease and be playful too in ways he never had been back when he was a disciple. Seeing him feel free to be himself made Lili love him even more.
Once he finished washing the grass and dirt from her hair they played in the water until Lili's fingers pruned and the sun started his slow descent. Orlok's stomach growled loudly and he blushed to the tips of his ears as they dragged themselves back onto the grass. Lili's slip clung to her like a second skin, defeating whatever modesty she'd been hoping for, but if she was honest with herself she didn't mind too much when she caught her husband staring.
Orlok used his shirt to somewhat dry himself off and put his pants on as Lili set out the food from the basket. He joined her, sitting shoulder-to-shoulder as they chatted and ate in the warm afternoon sunlight. The chill of the water lingered on her skin even as her slip dried in the summer heat.
“This was fun. Thank you, Orlok.” She leaned in and kissed his cheek. He smiled brightly and kissed her lips, soft and sweet. The taste of their lunch lingered on his lips, and she followed him as he pulled away.
He chuckled and pressed his forehead to hers. “I’m happy I could share it with you.” She felt more than saw his blush. “If you want…we can continue at home…?” He casually pulled at the strap of her slip, still half-clinging to her skin.
Whatever relief the cool water brought was gone in an instant, but she found the heat didn’t bother her this time.
“I’d like that.”
