The world seemed a lot quieter, he decided. There were still birds and the whistle of wind through the trees, children laughing and brooks bubbling. Everything was just different now. As though there was a lost, echo-y sound to it all.

He tried not to let it bother him. Day to day living made that relatively easy: Epona needed grooming and attention, there was always food to hunt. But he’d spent a week out in the woods training just a while ago, living off the land, reliving memories that should have long since been buried.

“Link?”

He glanced up at Ilia, a soft smile lighting up his face. “Hey.”

She smiled right back. “It’s good to see you can still smile. I thought you’d lost that ability somewhere along the way.” Link frowned a little as his friend took a seat beside him, crouched down with her arms wrapped around her knees. “We’ve rather missed it.”

Link scratched the back of his head through his hat and returned his attention to the thin line bobbing in the water. Usually no one bothered him at his favorite fishing hole, but Ilia was the exception. “Yeah. I’m fine though.”

“Mmm…” She trailed her fingers along the grass, gently plucking them up piece by piece. Link was almost grateful for the silence.

Wind whistled through the reeds a few feet away and Ilia leaned over to nudge him. “Want to play some music?” She plucked up some of the reeds before he could answer and handed him one. Epona glanced up from her place a few feet away, ears flicking slightly. She snorted when Link waved at her and returned to eating, and the Hylian felt a pang of regret. He wouldn’t ever be able to understand her again. Not in the same way, at least.

Ilia gently blew through the reed, the sound airy. Link looked down at his own, turning it around in his hands. He knew each note by heart and hummed along with her, throat rumbling gently.

…It wasn’t deep enough. There should be a rougher timber, a low rumble with a high pitched lilt at the end as he bellowed out the final notes. Where was the echo from his brother, the forlorn howl of the white--

Ilia’s song stopped with the sound of crunching grass, and Link opened his hand quickly to let the remains of the reed drop. He could feel Epona’s eyes on him.

“Link…”

“I’m fine.” He stood and brushed his tunic off before reeling in his line. “The fish just aren’t biting today, I guess.”

She was silent for a long while. “That’s your answer?”

He looked over at her as she stood out of her crouch, the reed gently cupped in her hands. He couldn’t look at her for too long.

“Yeah. It is.”

“Ah.” She bent down to gently lay the reed in the water and they both watched the ripples carry it away. When she stood again she was smiling, and Link silently thanked her. “Let’s go back home.”

He smiled a little and nodded. Once his fishing gear was packed away he mounted Epona and held out his hand for Ilia. She grinned and let him help her up, taking the spot behind him and wrapping her arms around his waist.

They left the fishing hole at a slow trot, Ilia’s head on Link’s back offering some needed distraction from the dull sounds of a world he didn’t quite fit into anymore.
