The first time he sees her he thinks she’s beautiful. That particular view is gone within seconds when she turns her glare on him and screeches so loud he thinks his ears will break. Their relationship only falters from there.
The first time she kicks him he doesn’t blame her—she’s having one of her headaches and is thrashing around everywhere. When she does it again (and again and again) he quickly loses what little pity he once had. She’s violent and impish and hates him, and he hates her back. Dewey tells him everything is alright, not to worry; she’s just a child like Dominic, after all, and her pain makes her do strange things.
Dominic tries to take Dewey’s words to heart, but it’s difficult every time he enters Anemone’s room. The girl is wild and takes pleasure in torturing him, he’s sure. And no matter how much she screams in pain with her headaches, he can’t help but have a smug grin on his face.
It takes over a year before his anger towards her begins to ebb. Dewey pulls him aside and hands him a heavy box with instructions to give its contents to Anemone. Dominic frowns but says nothing, because Dewey is Dewey and he will always listen.
She doesn’t acknowledge him when he enters the room, but that’s far from unnatural. Dominic carries the box over to her bed and sets it down, muttering that she has a gift from Dewey. Anemone instantly changes her attitude and squees happily, tearing the box open to reveal a strange white creature. Both of them pause, confused, before the animal crawls up onto Anemone’s lap and mews.
She laughs. A pure, honest laugh.
That moment changes Dominic’s view of Anemone, and he can’t say why. She’s abusive and violent and hates him, but he can’t seem to hate her back. Eventually he tells himself it’s because he’s older, that he’s a soldier and almost an adult, but that reason never seems truly honest and he secretly knows its because he wants to protect her.
And when Dewey is imprisoned and everything falls apart, Dominic is the first to step forward for Anemone’s sake, because no one else would care enough to protect someone so broken she doesn’t even realize it.
