May. 5th, 2009 12:57 amTitle: Price
Wordcount: 298
Fandom: Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle
Rating: G
Warnings: Spoilers for a big major plot pointy thing in recent chapters. What is with me and random introspection what isn't all that introspective?
Summary: The hardest thing they've ever done is watch each other.
The glass hums softly as he hits it, no longer any real power behind the movement. He does not know how long it’s been since he last touched her; since his fingers brushed hers, since their lips met, since he held her in his arms. It kills him to see her there, right there, only the thinnest of glass between them but still farther apart than they’ve ever been.
Their price is heavy—they always knew it would be so. But this… This is too much.
She scratches her palms as she squeezes her hands tightly and calls his name weakly, the pain a dull, never-ending ache in her heart. She scratches at the glass helplessly, longs for her wand and her cards and a comforting voice she can imagine but no longer hear.
The days, months, years pass endlessly in silence and still they fight to reach each other; their only way to stave off the insanity threatening at the edges of their consciousness. He has always been stubborn and she has her invincible phrase, but their price cannot be retracted.
When the light finally comes, when suddenly a voice breaks their eons-long silence with a burst of translucent wings, all the fear and pain and desire surges back. He screams and pounds at the glass until his hands are numb and she calls his name as she’s pulled away to somewhere neither knows. Their debt is paid and they are free, but freedom is an unknown and he cannot lose her now, cannot deal without her presence.
The glass shatters as he hits it again, her name ringing like a bell in the stillness, and all that’s left is a small, ornate container in a crowded room as a dark-haired woman slowly turns and walks away.
